Coroico, Bolivia: Day 12

English: Today, we had the wonderful opportunity to go to the UAC. This is the only rural college in Bolivia. We ran into some students, although, most were not on the campus. We learned that the students have a social responsibility to the campus, regarding cleaning and cooking. Why doesn’t the University of Colorado Boulder do this? The University students pay about 170 bs per month to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, at the UAC.

We went into the kitchen, and it looked nothing like the dining hall that we have at our University (obviously), but what made it all the more grateful for me was being told that the students have to clean and wash their own dishes after they use them. It made me more aware of how spoiled Americans are, again.

We then went to where the Agronomy projects are in the fields. This was the interesting and beautiful part of the entire visit. There were many areas that we saw, but a main area that I found interesting was a project that the students are participating in where they grow vegetables hydroponically (without soil). The students build all of these areas on their own – wow!

Luis and Agustin (two students of the UAC) continued to show us around. What are the benefits of these projects, you may ask?

·      Grow more is less space (preserving space)

·      Less time

·      Less water

These projects are focuses on organic production, and not chemical production. Also, with these projects, there is less fungus produced, when you are planting off of the ground.

The fields had many other projects, such as a bio-digester – we are seriously looking at the future of my University. The University that I attend (University of Colorado at Boulder) has not even begun to start up these projects. They are still planning ways to collaborate on how to start these neat projects, when the rural students of Bolivia are already half way done. There is definitely a sense of intelligence in students who (literally) have to work for everything they have.

Today, we listened to the defense of two Thesis projects. In the UAC, every single student who is a part of this rural college must do a Thesis or they can not graduate. Each Thesis costs about 700 us dollars. Some students can’t afford to do a Thesis, so they are stuck and can’t graduate from college. Oh, how lucky are we? I truly believe that if the University that I attend made every student do a Thesis, students at the University would value their education so much more and not take it for granted:

·      The first Thesis presentation was on: Chia plants

·      The second Thesis presentation was on: Education – this Thesis was the most interesting for me. Her methods are amazing: diagnostic (questionnaires), introducing brain games, and analyzing changes (from before and after the methods used). She chose this strategy, because what would happen is that students would read, but would not get the main idea. Marleny’s point was that students learn more in a fun way rather than in a practical way. She believes that there is a loss in culture of reading (books), because there is an increase in the production of technology. We are like zombies with technology. This is one reason why I am very grateful to have deleted Snapchat, Instagram, etc., and only have Facebook and LinkedIn. Technology ruins our natural selves, and I knew that I couldn’t get to where I want to go, if I didn’t let go of the majority of social media and technology.

·      The third Thesis presentation was on: Coffee production

From the education Thesis presentation a couple of other key points learned:

·      Children are less encouraged to attend school to help out with the family, especially coming from a poor background.

Later on this evening, we had a lecture on Critical Thinking and why this class was so important. We also wanted a movie: Kawsachun Coca (a movie produced by a Master’s Thesis student). Within the lecture I learned:

• Critical thinking is thinking about your thinking while you're thinking in order to make your thinking better
• Level 1: Dualism -- Truth is black and white, absolutistic, polar terms 
• Level 2: Multiplicity -- Differing options are allowed, but seen as temporary until the "Truth" is discovered
• Level 3: Relativism -- Knowledge and values are understood to be correct based on context; acknowledgement of a realistic world causes anxiety due to understanding commitments must be made
• Level 4: Commitment in Relativism (personal process) -- Commitments to life direction and values begin to be made, responsibility to selected commitments is explored, affirmation of multiple commitments, responsibilities and consequences occur 
• Bloom's Revised Taxonomy -- remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating 

In the movie, "Kawsachun Coca", here are a couple of notes that I took:

• 2 million people in this world are considered addicts -- 22-25 million have consumed
• 113 tons of Cocaine is produced -- the third largest producer (keep in mind this video was made a couple of years ago)
• Coca (in it's natural leaf state) doesn't hurt us rather it gives us strength; other fruits don't give economic benefits like coca does 
• Bolivia (late 1970s) supplied more than half of the worlds cocaine

Spanish: Hoy, tuvimos la maravillosa oportunidad de ir a la UAC. Este es el único colegio rural en Bolivia. Nos encontramos con algunos estudiantes, aunque, la mayoría no estaban en el campus. Aprendimos que los estudiantes tienen una responsabilidad social con el plantel, con respecto a la limpieza y la cocina. ¿Por qué la Universidad de Colorado Boulder no hace esto? Más tarde, esta noche, tuvimos una conferencia sobre Pensamiento Crítico y por qué esta clase era tan importante. También queríamos una película: Kawsachun Coca (una película producida por un estudiante de Tesis de Maestría). Dentro de la conferencia aprendí:
