Coroico, Bolivia: Day 7

English: Today, I had the morning message and I discussed codeswitching between African Americans and even other cultures and the significance of it. I also talked about the meaning of “Sankofa”. Pastoral Social Caritas of Coroico (a Catholic organization) was visited by us. Their mission is to achieve a more just society; solidarity and unified is their ultimate goal. They want to improve the development of the rights of all the people. This program works with organizations such as health education, environment, production, etc. They also work with the blind people in the community. If a person has an I.D. from the government, it is completely free.

This program really wants to make a goal of fortifying and strengthen these organizations (fortalecimiento). This program doesn’t employ the doctors and nurses to do the work but they will make sure that under give years old – they’ll have a connection with the services that they provide. They make sure that everyone is served in the community.  They act as a facilitator and accompany mothers with children to the hospital to make sure they are getting everything checked. This program provides a sense of social consciousness in Bolivia; they responds quickly to the needs of the people.

A key interesting fact is that the hospitals in Yungas used to have solar panels but humidity destroyed them.

This program also teaches women how to purify water, how to do household production, teaches them about domestic violence, and simply getting to know their rights.

Later on, Sonia and Carol gave us a lecture on the Aymara culture that they have here in Coroico, Bolivia. There are many Aymara people from after the revolution. Life is hard in the Yungas; being in the Yungas and growing up there is literally for the song lyric “It’s hard out here for a…Yungas”. Usually people go from high school to making coca (almost 50% of the community), because they can make quick money. The University (@ the Waak) chooses two people a year from Bolivia to learn in America (wow!). Sonia said no at first, but then she realized that she needed the opportunity to expand.

We later watched the movie, “Cocaine Unwrapped”. This was an interesting movie. This movie provided so many facts that are important to know as an individual:

·   Over 11 million western consumers of cocaine (that is 90% casual users)

·   Many people who are the leader of a household are unemployed and they have to put money in the house and food on the table; the only way to do that is through illegal drug dealing

·   Manual forced eradication or fumigation is the way that many of the police enforcement; by this the entire source of food security is destroyed – while this is happening the families are held at gunpoint

The medical sides of the coca leaf are many, a few including: aiding digestion, and being a great anti-oxidant. Even the World Health Organization stated that the coca leaf in its natural form is NOT harmful to human health, OBVIOUSLY, cocaine IS. Coca is NOT cocaine.

Spanish: Hoy, tuve el mensaje de la mañana y conversé sobre el intercambio de códigos entre los afroamericanos e incluso otras culturas y la importancia de la misma. También hablé del significado de "Sankofa". Pastoral Social Caritas de Coroico (una organización católica) fue visitada por nosotros. Su misión es lograr una sociedad más justa; Solidaridad y unificación es su objetivo último. Quieren mejorar el desarrollo de los derechos de todas las personas. Este programa trabaja con organizaciones como educación en salud, medio ambiente, producción, etc. También trabajan con personas ciegas en la comunidad. Si una persona tiene un I.D. Desde el gobierno, es completamente gratuito. Este programa realmente quiere hacer un objetivo de fortificar y fortalecer estas organizaciones (fortalecimiento). Este programa no emplea los doctores y las enfermeras para hacer el trabajo sino que se cerciorará de que debajo dan años - tendrán una conexión con los servicios que proporcionan. Hay muchos aymaras después de la revolución. La vida es dura en los Yungas; Estar en los Yungas y crecer allí es literalmente para la letra de la canción "Es difícil salir aquí para un ... Yungas". Por lo general, la gente va de la escuela secundaria a hacer coca (casi el 50% de la comunidad), porque pueden ganar dinero rápido.
